HIPS (high-impact polystyrene) is a lightweight, economical plastic with a smooth, matte surface, easy to process and thermoform. It is a cheaper and lighter alternative to ABS for less demanding applications — it draws and cuts well, but has lower mechanical and chemical resistance. It is a basic material for mouldings, packaging and lightweight display elements.
HIPS sheets are especially valued in thermoforming — they stretch evenly, reproduce mould detail well and are approved (in the food-grade version) for food contact, which makes them a popular material for packaging and trays. Standardly white, also available in colours and in a printable version.
Processing and cutting to size
We cut HIPS to size, mill it and prepare it for thermoforming. The material draws easily even on simple moulds, takes print well and is easy to machine. Thanks to its low weight and cost it works well in series production of lightweight elements. Cut to your dimensions.
How to choose HIPS thickness
Thin sheets (0.5–2 mm) are used for mouldings, packaging and trays. Thicker ones (3–6 mm) work well in lightweight display panels and indoor guards. For applications requiring greater strength, ABS is the better choice. See the colour range.
