What is mechanical machining of acrylic
PMMA is hard but brittle — standard metal drill bits cause chipping and cracking. Correct drilling requires bits with modified point angle, low feed rate and cooling. We provide:
- Hole drilling — mounting holes (standoffs, screws, hangers), functional holes, holes for lighting.
- Threading — threads in the plastic or for inserts/bushings.
- Chamfering and countersinking — for screw heads, hole edge chamfers.
- Mechanical machining — fitting, cutouts, finishing work (combined with CNC milling for more complex jobs).

FAQ
Why does acrylic crack when drilled with a regular bit?
Metal bits have a point angle that “bites into” brittle PMMA and tears the material. Acrylic requires bits with modified geometry and low feed rate — hence clean, crack-free holes.
Do you thread acrylic?
Yes — we thread the plastic directly or install threaded inserts/bushings, depending on the load on the joint.
Are holes near the edge safe?
Too close to the edge risks cracking; we maintain a minimum edge distance depending on thickness. We advise when reviewing the drawing.
