PETG (glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate) is a transparent plastic combining the advantages of acrylic and polycarbonate — it is more impact-resistant than PMMA, while easier to cold-process than polycarbonate, with no cracking when bent. It works well where good transparency and impact resistance are needed at a moderate cost, and the requirements are not at the level of polycarbonate's extreme impact resistance.
PETG is a food-contact-approved material, which makes it a popular choice in catering and display packaging. It withstands thermoforming and deep drawing well, while retaining transparency close to that of acrylic. It is not, however, as scratch-resistant as PMMA, so for applications requiring high surface resistance acrylic is sometimes the better choice.
Processing and cutting to size
We cut PETG to size mechanically and with a laser, and the material can be cold-bent into much sharper curves than acrylic or polycarbonate, without edge cracking. This makes it the material of first choice for thermoforming and deep drawing — e.g. in producing display packaging or guards with complex shapes. Thermoforming PETG.
How to choose PETG thickness
For display packaging and hygiene screens 0.5–1 mm is enough. Thinner formats (up to 3 mm) are used in bending and thermoforming, where the flexibility of the material matters. Thicker sheets (4–6 mm) are chosen for elements requiring greater stiffness, e.g. protective guards or display panels without supports. PETG colour chart.
