Opal acrylic, also called opal, is acrylic glass (PMMA) with light-diffusing properties — it transmits light evenly while masking the backlight source (e.g. LED strips) that would be visible through clear or lightly tinted acrylic. It is the basic material for illuminated panels, where a uniform, mark-free glowing surface matters rather than transparency.
Variants are available with different degrees of opalescence — from lightly milky (higher transmission, weaker LED masking) to strongly opaque (lower transmission, full concealment of the light source). The material retains the other properties of acrylic: UV resistance, easy laser cutting and polishing, and low weight compared to opal glass.
Processing and cutting to size
We cut opal acrylic to size by laser, allowing precise shapes of illuminated panels and letters with a smooth edge. The material mills and drills well for mounting profiles and LED housings. When designing an illuminated panel it is worth matching the degree of opalescence to the LED spacing and power — a sheet that is too thin or too transparent will reveal point light sources as visible spots. How to choose opal acrylic thickness
For light boxes and LED panels 3–6 mm is typically used — a compromise between light diffusion and cost. Thicker sheets (8–10 mm) are chosen for wider LED spacing or when the panel must be self-supporting without a frame. A smaller thickness with dense LED spacing, a greater one with sparser spacing, to avoid the “spotting” effect. Acrylic sample range.
At PLEXIPOL you can buy opal acrylic cut to size for a light box or LED panel, with advice on choosing the degree of opalescence. We have been operating since 1995, serving B2B and individual customers.
