Multiwall polycarbonate cut to size is a multi-layer PC sheet built from parallel air channels connected by ribs. Unlike solid polycarbonate, which is uniform and full, the multiwall structure favours low weight and high thermal insulation — at the cost of somewhat lower impact resistance. Choosing between them: solid works best where maximum mechanical strength matters, multiwall — where daylighting a room, a lightweight structure and reducing heat loss matter more.

The air channels act as natural insulation, so the multiwall sheet conducts heat much more weakly than a uniform sheet of the same thickness, while being about 60–70% lighter than solid polycarbonate. Sheets have two-sided UV protection, work in a range from −40°C to +120°C, and are self-extinguishing. Light transmission in the clear variant reaches 80%, enough to effectively daylight interiors while keeping thermal comfort.

Processing and cutting to size

We cut multiwall sheets to size along and across the channels, keeping the structure sealed. The material can be cold-bent into a curve, used for arched roofs and skylights. It's important to orient the channels correctly (following the water drainage slope) and to seal the edges with vapour-permeable tape so moisture doesn't get into the chambers — we advise on this with every order.

How to choose multiwall polycarbonate thickness

Thinner sheets (4–8 mm) are enough for small roofs and garden canopies. Thicker variants (10–32 mm) are used in roofing with larger spans, conservatories and roof glazing, where rigidity and thermal insulation matter at low structural weight. The thicker the sheet, the better the insulation, but the lower the light transmission — the choice is always a trade-off. Polycarbonate colour chart.

At PLEXIPOL you can buy multiwall polycarbonate cut to size for your project, with advice on choosing thickness and chamber structure. We have been operating since 1995, serving both B2B customers and retail orders.

Examples of applications

  • Terrace and garden canopy roofing — light covers with good thermal insulation.
  • Conservatories and winter gardens — daylighting the interior while limiting heat loss.
  • Greenhouses and polytunnels — a hail-resistant alternative to glass and film.
  • Skylights and roof glazing for halls — light daylighting over large spans.
  • Bus shelters and parking canopies — durable covers resistant to weather conditions.
  • Acoustic screens along roads — lighter support structure than a solid sheet.
  • Illuminated advertising lightboxes — the multi-chamber structure diffuses light evenly.
  • Partitions and interior walls — light fillings in halls and retail premises.
